William Romaine Newbold's annotations in black and red ink, in an interleaved copy of the published work: Jamblichi De mysteriis liber (Berolini: prostat in libraria Frideici Nicolai, 1857), edited by Gustav Parthey. One leaf of notes located in the preface contains bibliographical references, the latest dated 1911. Several leaves of notes are dated. Two leaves bear dates in 1912 (leaf facing p. XLI: Begin Nov. 27, 1917; facing p.XLV: Nov. 18, 1912); and one in 1913 (leaf facing p. 104). Two leaves have notes dated in 1915, one reading: Begin May 22, 1915 (leaf facing p. 99); and the other reading: Finished, rough draught, May 6, 1915 (on the last leaf containing notes, facing p. 294).

Graduate of the University of Pennsylvania in 1887, and subsequently pursued graduate work there in philosophy, earning a Ph.D. in 1891; taught at Penn from around 1892, becoming a full professor in 1903; in 1907 named the Adam Seybert Professor of Intellectual and Moral Philosophy, a position he held until his death.
